Review: Gidleigh Park

Gidleigh Park

Set against the tranquil upper reaches of the River Teign, Gidleigh Park epitomises refined luxury and serene beauty. This Tudor-style country house, meticulously curated by the Brownsword family, graces the edge of Dartmoor National Park, enveloped in 107 acres of manicured gardens and mature woodlands.

The estate’s location is undeniably strategic, offering both seclusion and accessibility. The grounds themselves are a masterclass in horticultural excellence, featuring bluebell woods that enchant visitors each spring and a kitchen garden that offers a tantalising glimpse into the estate’s culinary ambitions.

Our accommodation in the dog-friendly Master Room was the epitome of comfort and sophistication. Overlooking the tranquil river and forest, the initial impression of peace and quiet remained a constant companion throughout our stay. The room embodied understated luxury, adorned with fine antiques, sumptuous fabrics, and a king-size Vispring bed. Modern conveniences such as complimentary Wi-Fi, L’Occitane skincare products, and plush bathrobes ensured that no detail was overlooked in the pursuit of guest satisfaction.

Culinary excellence is the cornerstone of Gidleigh Park’s appeal, with Head Chef Chris Eden at the helm of the acclaimed restaurant since 2019. Eden, a Michelin star and fourth AA rosette recipient, brings a produce-driven ethos to his culinary creations. His menus reflect a commitment to seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients, artfully blending tradition with innovation. During my stay, I was particularly impressed by our dinner, which featured the freshest picks from the kitchen garden. Each bite was a delight, culminating in a cheese course beautifully complemented by estate-grown honeycomb and homemade gooseberry chutney. Each course was a memorable experience, showcasing Eden’s masterful ability to blend simplicity with sophistication.

Gidleigh Park

Something that really stood out is the staff at Gidleigh Park. Every member I met was exemplary in their professionalism and warmth. Their attentive service and genuine care transformed a stay at the estate into a wonderful warm and memorable experience, where every interaction is marked by a commitment to excellence and a personal touch that elevates the standard of British hospitality.

Gidleigh Park is not merely a destination but an experience—a retreat where luxury and tranquillity converge. Its majestic setting, combined with impeccable service and culinary prowess, offers an unparalleled escape on the edge of Dartmoor. For those seeking a blend of nature, peace, luxury, and gastronomic delight, Gidleigh Park stands as a beacon of refined indulgence. I left with a profound appreciation for the culinary artistry and the serene beauty of the estate. I am already anticipating my return to this exceptional haven.
