A Cornish Gem: Dining at Harbour House, Flushing

Harbour House Flushing

The village of Flushing has long been a quiet yet picturesque retreat along Cornwall’s coastline, and nestled among its historic streets lies Harbour House, a pub that redefines waterside dining. Owners Tamara Costin and William Speed have created something extraordinary, seamlessly blending rustic charm with contemporary elegance. It is a place where history breathes in every corner, from the beautifully restored interiors to the Penryn-made upcycled lighting, and a bar lovingly crafted by a traditional boat builder.

Upon entering, I was greeted with a warmth that spoke volumes of the hospitality at this delightful establishment. The service was exemplary, with Will, the manager, and Lois, my server, ensuring I felt at home from the moment I arrived. Charlotte, the chef, delivered dishes that felt as much a reflection of the Cornish spirit as they were an exploration of the finest local ingredients. Every element of the meal seemed to showcase the quality of the surrounding seas and fields, yet with an understated grace that was in keeping with the surroundings.

To start, I indulged in Burrata with figs and honey, a delicate yet indulgent combination, perfectly balanced with a hint of sweetness from the honey. My companion opted for the Prawn and Langoustine cocktail, a dish so fresh that one could almost taste the sea breeze from just beyond the window.

For the mains, a generous 12oz Rump steak arrived perfectly cooked with a peppercorn and shallot butter, accompanied by crisp, golden fries—a dish full of satisfying flavours and textures. My Pollock with masala sauce was equally impressive, with its bright and bold flavours, paired expertly with charred gem lettuce and a side of confit garlic new potatoes, each bite rich and comforting.

The dessert was a pleasant surprise —soft serve ice cream swirled with lemon curd and meringue, a dessert that felt like summer on the Cornish coast, light yet full of flavour and big enough for two to share. Paired with a glass of Organic Sauvignon Blanc from Austria and a refreshing non-alcoholic Negroni, it was the perfect way to conclude a meal that felt timeless and thoughtfully curated.

Harbour House is more than just a pub—it’s an experience, a place where culinary craftsmanship meets genuine hospitality. It’s no wonder the Michelin inspectors have already paid a visit, offering praise for its unpretentious yet artful menu. With an impressive selection of Cornish beers, ciders, and a wine list curated by Wanderlust, it’s a place that invites you to linger by the fire, to savour each moment, each dish, and each sip.

As I left, bathed in the late afternoon sunlight streaming across the water, I couldn’t help but feel that Harbour House is exactly what every coastal village should have: a place of warmth, creativity, and excellence, where the food is as beautiful as the setting. And for that alone, it’s worth resetting your compass and heading straight for Flushing.
